Sad to see that Readers Digest UK is closing after 86 years

That is sad indeed. I used to like Readers' Digest, but I haven't had one for years.

Problem is, people don't want to read books and magazines anymore, which is a sad indictment on society. I know folk read more on the internet these days, but it's not the same as holding a book in your hands and turning the pages. I wouldn't even have one of those Kindle things. I know, I'm just old-fashioned, but I'd rather be that way than be at the mercy of an infernal machine just to read stories.

I've never been a reader, In my whole life I've only ever read what I've needed to, instruction manuals or music tutors, I bought ' play guitar in a day' by Bert Weeden and, that did't work and I felt cheated ,
Because my head was only installed with a low ' hard drive' I have to, piece meal the info so, when reading I just look for the answer i need and often miss it because I skip all the shaff to get to the wheat, I play by ear in music and in life's problems, Work it out by trial and error, There is probably a clinical name for my condition and if I had the time and inclination , I could probably sue the education for not identifying it and get compensation, then again I might right a book on , how to get through life with an unidentified reading problem

Tom, you're not alone. My partner wasn't a great reader either, but he played bass guitar, rhythm guitar, then went onto keyboards and played by ear. He never missed a Minor or Minor 7th etc and he was terrific backing for me.

Not everybody has the same interests or, in particular, the talent for everything. Take me, for instance. I have a very good command of the English language because my job demands it, but maths are totally mystifying to me so I have to use a calculator. At school I was top in English, and bottom in maths. Any plants or flowers I try to grow die on me, but I'm good with animals. I can't follow instructions for, say, setting up a TV, or building a piece of furniture.

Reading isn't for everyone and, to be honest, I haven't picked up a book in years, mainly because me yed's full of jolly robins and find it hard to concentrate these days. We only want to learn what interests us.

You don't have a low hard drive because you could do loads of things I wouldn't have a clue about, so never put me in charge of replacing a toilet, or a tap.

One of my old work mates would go to sunny climates for his holidays and sit at the side of the pool all day with a book. When he got hot he would have a dip in the pool then go back to reading his book I don't think he ever went away from the hotel pool to see the sights of where ever he was staying.

All this 'playing by ear' is beyond me. I used to play the piano, but I only ever managed it using my fingers!

When I was learning to play the guitar at school, I was having a problem playing a part of a tune, and my music teacher Mr Cutter got annoyed with me, and he snapped at me "oh well play it by ear then" and I didn't say to him "and how the do I go about that then" but I didn't say that because I liked him, but the thought of playing a guitar with my ear did make me smile

it works, like this if you play a single note and then another single note and it might sound good or it might sound bad, playing by ear is playing the notes that sound right, If you cannot distinguish the difference, You will not be able to play by ear but, you can still play by reading music because the, Dots are telling you the notes that sound good,

Its similar to painting by numbers, The proper artists like Momac can see in her mind the image she wants to reproduce on paper, painting by numbers can still look good so its not wrong and more people can learn to do it,
